SANDRA PIQUES EDDY, Fiona in this month's Met premiere of Nico Muhly's Two Boys, begins 2014 at Nashvile Opera, where she will be Rosina in Il barbiere di Siviglia in January and February. Eddy travels to Denver in May, when she will sing the title role in Opera Colorado's Carmen. July 2014 will find the mezzo at the Hyogo Performing Arts Center in Japan for Dorabella in Cosi fan tutte.
Carmen will be May 3, 6, 9, 11. Updated to 1930s revolutionary Spain, Opera Colorado’s intimate production will bring the orchestra on stage, placing the musicians directly in the midst of the action. Mezzo-soprano Sandra Piques Eddy will sing the title role.
A day in the life of mezzo soprano Sandra Piques Eddy might find her singing Rosina for Lyric Opera of Kansas City, or the title role in La tragédie de Carmen with Chicago Opera Theater, or La Cenerentola with Austin Lyric Opera—not to mention any number of supporting roles at the Metropolitan Opera, her artistic home for over 10 years. She is currently in rehearsal for Così fan tutte with Boston Lyric Opera, with (Sir) Thomas Allen as both stage director and Don Alfonso. His direction on the recitatives, Eddy says, is just amazing. “Like an acting class with music.”
The Metropolitan Opera's 2013-14 season will feature more than two-hundred performances of twenty-six operas — six of which will play in new productions, including a U.S. premiere, the company announced today. The company's 130th season will open on September 23 with a new production of Eugene Onegin, featuring Anna Netrebko as Tatiana, Piotr Beczala as Lenski and Mariusz Kwiecien in the title role. Deborah Warner's staging of Tchaikovsky's opera — a co-production with English National Opera — returns later in the season with a second cast featuring Peter Mattei in the title role, Marina Poplavskaya as Tatiana and Rolando Villazón as Lenski.
